First settled in the 1830's, Glenview was incorporated as a village in 1899 with an estimated population of 351. The village was already a thriving community thanks to the excellent farming land found in the area and the arrival of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad shortly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Located just 20 miles from downtown Chicago, Glenview soon became one of the area's most prosperous communities. A friendly town resembling an old time village, it is favored by a span of age groups.

Early settlers would be amazed to see their quiet village now a thriving commuity noted for its outstanding amenities, attractive retail center and excellent schools. Glenview residents can take part in a variety of civic and community activities and take advantage of the village's extensive parks and recreation system. Glenview is home to the Kennicott Grove, a National Historic Landmark, which was the 1836 homestead of the visonary horticulturist and educator Dr. John Kennicott and later, his son, explorer Robert Kennicott. Today, the Grove is a nature preserve that also offers a year-round schedule of educational programs for all ages. The Village also contains Wagner Farm - one of the last working farms in the the near-Chicago suburbs. A variety of programs for young residents include the opportunity to take part in the actual, day-to-day operation of the farm.

For many years, Glenview was also known as the home of the Glenview Naval Air Station. Opended in 1937, that station was phased out by the Department of Defense in 1995. The closing of the Station provided the village with the opportunity to develop approximately 1,121 acres of land into an impressive mixed use district with new homes, offices and retail space. Public amentities include Lake Glenview, the 140-acre Gallery Park and the 31-acre Air Station Prairie, two golf courses and a Metra train station.

Parks and Recreation. In addition to operating The Grove and Wagner Farm, the Glenview Park District offers over 585 acres of parks and facilities to serve many interests including the Glenview Tennis Club, Glenview Ice Center, the Glenview Park Golf Club, Glenview National 9 Golf Club, two outdoor pools and Park Center, an award-winning state-of-the-art community center. Programs are offered year-round for residents of all ages.

Schools. Glenview has long been known for its dedication to quality education. In fact, Glenview is the only village in Illinois to have a high school, junior high school and an elementary school all receive the U.S. Department of Education's "National Excellence in Education" award. Elementary students attend school districts 30,31,34,37,63 and 65. High school students attend one of three highly rated local schools. The majority of high school students attend Glenbrook South High School in district 225 while some secondary students attend New Trier High School in district 203 or Maine East High School in district 207.

Housing. Glenview offers a variety of housing options with single-family home styles ranging from classic Tudors and Colonials to ranches and contemporary masterpieces. In recent years, a number of attractive townhome complexes, as well as an abundance of condominiums, have been developed in the village. The opening of The Glen has added a further dimension of brand new housing options, including senior housing and extended care facilities.

Transporation. Glenview is located between the Edens Expresway (I-94) and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). Drive time to the Loop is approximately 30 minutes. O'Hare Ariport is a 20 minute drive and Midway Airport 55 minutes away. Metra trains reach downtown Chicago's Union Station in 35 minutes and operate from the recently renovated downtown Glenview station and the new Glen station. Local bus service is also available
